Introducing the Surya Top Trek: A thrilling summit climb amid grand meadows
Jan 23rd, 11.00 a.m.

We have news of a fantastic new trek we brought out: the Surya Top trek.

We'll admit, Surya Top is actually an old trek. Our founders had done this trek in the early days of Indiahikes. Yet, they had not opened up this trek because the Dayara Bugyal trek was nearby. They feared trekkers would get confused between the two treks.

But if we have to paint a complete picture, Surya Top is the real deal. It covers the entire expanse of the Dayara Bugyal trek (which you don’t do even on the Dayara Bugyal trek); in addition, it passes over two other bugyals, takes you to a camp next to the lovely Devkund pond and finally, makes a beautiful summit climb. The view from the summit of Mt. Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, and the Gangotri ranges is jaw-dropping.

Such summit climbs just don't exist in our country. Kedarkantha and Chandrashila are two summit climbs that come close but don't have grand meadows leading up to the summit. Neither do they have such up-close mountain views.

The trek is best done in the spring, summer, and autumn. You’ll experience the best of the forests, the meadows, and the thrilling summit climb. You’ll find current dates in March, April, May, and June. Plan soon!

After three years, we have finally opened up the much-awaited Atsunta Pass trek in Georgia. Dates are now available for July when the trail becomes a complete flower-bouquet trek. As our founder says, if you sweep your arm across the grasslands and clutch your palms together, you'll have a bouquet in your hand. Such is the density of flowers. Not to mention the rich culture you'll see all along the trek, it's incomparable to any other country we have trekked in.

This is a trek that we first opened in 2019. Unfortunately, the trek was closed off for the past three years, first with COVID and then because of the disturbance in Ukraine. But tourism has opened up in Georgia, and in a big way. So much so that there is now a direct flight from India (New Delhi) to Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia.

So if you are looking to trek and do something exceptional this year, don't ignore Georgia. It is a trek that must be on every trekker's bucket list. Plan soon because we have just two dates with small groups of 12-15 trekkers.

Every month, the Bahai community in Bangalore conducts a discourse on various topics. This time, they chose a topic close to our hearts: sustainability. We were very happy when they invited the head of Green Trails at Indiahikes, Sharwari Brahme, to deliver a talk.

Over 60 members from all age groups attended the talk to learn about sustainability and how they can adopt these practices in their lives. Sharwari had the wonderful opportunity to share her stories and learnings, both from her personal life and her work at Indiahikes. The talk was emotional, full of learning, and ended with a Q&A bursting with questions.

At Indiahikes, there's nothing more we love to do than spread the message about sustainability. Whether it is on our treks or in our homes, we are continuously learning and practicing sustainability methods. Given our dedication and expertise in this field, several companies have been inviting us to do sustainability workshops for their teams.

If you would like to introduce such a workshop at your workplace, write to us at info@indiahikes.com. We'll be happy to help.

Indiahikes founder, Arjun Majumdar, was recently invited by IIIT Bangalore to speak at their annual summit, Confluence 24. With the theme "Butterfly Effect: Small Actions, Big Impact," he shared some rare stories from the past of Indiahikes, where small actions have caused a snowball effect in Indian trekking.

The past of Indiahikes is filled with such stories. Our creation story is among them, where a single blog post with credible information changed the lives of people in the remote mountains. The origin story of our Eco Bags is another such story, where a small thought resulted in thousands of trekkers cleaning up the mountains.

It's always wonderful for us to share these stories with keen listeners. IIIT was full of such listeners, who followed up with an interesting Q&A session. Our founder frequently talks at such institutions about lessons from his entrepreneurial journey. Yet, his favourite topic is always about the impact of trekking on the mind, body and spirit, which he covered wonderfully in his TEDx talk.

Frequenty Asked Questions

Winter starts in early December and lasts all the way until mid-March. December is the mere beginning of winter. Real winter sets in only in January and February!

It’s wonderful that you’re planning to start trekking in the Himalayas. You’d be happy to know that around 70% of our trekkers are beginners and always get hooked to trekking after their first trek!

Having said that, you must choose your trek wisely — something that is not too difficult, yet will allow you to experience the grand settings of the Himalayas.

From a decade of experience, these are the treks we find best suited for beginners:

Even though these treks are considered good for beginners, they need at least 30-45 days of preparation on your part. Ensure you go for the trek only after physically preparing for it.

Yes, we do have a “Repeat my trek” policy, and trekkers love it. This is because there are some thoughts and ideologies that we hold close to our hearts.

1. As trekkers, there are times when we have to let go of a trek midway. Sometimes we fall ill or get hit by AMS or at times simply fatigue pulls us down. At other times bad weather plays spoilsport, or the trail is blocked. Your Trek Leader may send you down due to a safety or health issue.

At Indiahikes we feel terrible when such an event happens.

Should such a situation occur that you have to drop out from this trek, we want you to know that we feel as bad as you do. You can always come back another time and finish your adventure. For this, you do not have to pay Indiahikes any money.

2. On the other hand, there are times when you fall in love with a trek. So much so that you want to do it again, perhaps see it in another season. If you ever desire to do a trek again, please do so. You don’t have to pay Indiahikes any money for repeating this trek. Just inform your Experience Coordinator who will guide you through a special internal process.

Our only request: Just register for your trek in advance – you know how it is with our groups – they get booked in advance.

Note: The Indiahikes “Repeat My Trek” policy does not apply to our international treks.

This is something many trekkers ask us. If you’re interested in working with us, take a look at our careers page. Given that our organisation is growing, we have lots of new roles opening up regularly.

We are always looking for team players, who understand the trekking world and fit into the working culture of Indiahikes. More than skills and experience, we pay attention to your behaviour and values.

Getting in and starting work here isn’t easy. There are several levels of interviews and tests. But once you get through, it is one of the most rewarding and meaningful journeys in your career.

Definitely! At Indiahikes, we believe renting is the way forward, to make trekking more efficient, and more economical, without compromising the quality of trekking gear. So we have a range of high-quality gear available for rent at very small costs.

Take a look at them here – https://store.indiahikes.com/

Your rental gear will be given to you at the base camp on the day you arrive.

In case you have rented a trekking backpack, you may use the cloakroom facility to keep your extra luggage. We want you to travel as light as possible from your home.

Renting of items close 3 days before the start of the trek.

Yes, absolutely. Many solo trekkers join our teams and have wonderful experiences. They end up meeting like-minded people on the trek and don't feel like they have come along on the trek anymore.

Our pre-trek experienced team ensures that you know your entire team well much before you actually head out on the trek.

Additionally, we have several women trekkers who join us solo as well because of the safety they get with the Indiahikes team. You're welcome to join us as a solo trekker too.

Why Indiahikes

You are safe with us

As industry leaders, we have innovated and set safety standards in the trekking industry. Our people, our processes, and our equipment—these are what make Indiahikes the safest trekking organisation in India.

You experience transformation

Trekkers often call the Indiahikes Experience “life-changing.” This is because, through our treks, we consciously bring about a transformative impact on your mind, body and spirit.

You trek sustainably

Green Trails is our promise to leave the mountains better. We have cleaned over 1 lakh kilos of waste from trekking trails. Yet this is a small percentage of what we do. Green Trails dives into reducing the use of resources, reducing our carbon footprint, and bringing about a change in the daily practices of our trekkers too.

You learn to trek on your own

On our treks, you learn skills that teach you to trek independently. Besides, not every time you trek, you will have Indiahikes next to you. Our vast database of trek information gives you all the confidence you need to trek on your own.

You can repeat treks at no cost

If you would like to repeat a trek with Indiahikes, you do not have to pay Indiahikes for it. Whether you have loved it and want to repeat it, or left it incomplete and want to go back to finish it, you can repeat your trek free of cost. Read more here
